Wear sunscreen every day

Post by marval » Thu Feb 04, 2016 7:28 am

Hey guys and girls,

Lately I've read some articles about sunscreen/sunblocks, on the improtance and benefits of wearing it every day (and applying it regularly, like in the morning and afternoon ).
So whether its sunny, cloudy/raining or you're at home or at the office...wear the sunscreen (spf 15, 30). Because the UVA-rays will penetrate the skin even if it's cloudy or through glass. Atricles like this and many more makes me wonder/worry -->> : http://blog.reneerouleau.com/do-i-need- ... e-all-day/
I know direct sunlight is not good, but even daylight on the streets (when cloudy) or being inside near windows has also an effect on the skin (if its true what a lot of dermatologist are claiming: the UVA and UVB rays).

Since 2 weeks I switched my regular daily-creme without SPF for a daily creme with SPF 30 (natural) for in the morning. Then around the afternoon I apply a natural sunblock, when I have the opportunity :ugeek: :ugeek: ...but offcourse, sometimes there are situations when it's not possible haha.
Direct sun exposure I'am avoiding as much as possible. In the country I'am living the sun isn't shining often anyway

If you wear it daily, be sure to take vitamin D supplements or get it from food

Who is also wearing sunscreen daily? Also I'am curious about opionions of the people here (and from Tom :geek: ).

PS. The people here want to have nice/healthy skin, so if we want to do everything the most optimal way it's: healthy diet, face exercizing, sports/exersize the body AND MINIMIZING SUN (UVA/UVB) EXPOSURE.. That's s why I want to know more about sunblock/sunscreen and daylight, as this can have a serieus effect on the skin after many years...even if we are eating healthy and doing face exercizes ? ?. But still...a healthy diet is one of the most important factors :).

Greetings, Marval

There are many conflicting ideas about how to keep your skin looking young and healthy. In Chapter Five - Sun Sense - of Paula Begoun's book, The Beauty Bible, she recommends using a high quality sunscreen at all times during the day and staying out of direct sun exposure. I highly recommend the 35 pages in this chapter of Paula's book for anyone interested in skin health and sun exposure.

But then there is Dr. Joseph Mercola who recommends "sensible" sun exposure without sunscreen almost every day of the year. He himself walks on the beach in Florida for two hours a day when the weather is good. He thinks that the vitamin D created when the skin is exposed to the sun is essential for optimum health. He also thinks that many of the sunscreens sold in stores have toxic chemicals in them. But he recommends protecting the face from the sun's rays.

I stay out of the sun now, although I had too much sun when I was young and a tennis addict. I don't use any sunscreen because I don't go out in the sun these days.

An observation: At the ballroom dances I go to I see some Asian women with absolutely gorgeous skin. It couldn't be more healthy looking. This good skin is probably a combination of three factors: (1) They don't go out in the sun much, (2) They in general eat nutritious food, and (3) They were born with great skin tone (genetics).

Last word - Get The Beauty Bible at the library and read Chapter Five.

Just on more thing :ugeek:

So you are neglecting that? Obviously putting on sunscreen 2,3 or 4 times every day, sounds crazy  ..and almost impossible in daily routines.
But the daylight thing, which the UVA rays are present every day is really bothering me. Like you said on your website: The result of this is premature aging, wrinkling of the skin, and a heightened susceptibility to the various types of skin cancer as we age.

What is your opinion? Shouldn't I think much about the daylight thing? Because we (being exaggerated) just cannot live in a cage somewhere in the darkness, in a house without dindows or doing daily living/working routines without daylight exposure every day .....being 100% protected against all UVB/UVA rays

And you are right about the 3 factors you've said, those are really the most important factors for the skin.

This is a year late, but I thought I'd post because this was a great concern of mine from way before too.

Will it count as advertising if I mention a good sunscreen? I've been using the Burn Out ECO zinc oxide sunscreen for years and think it's done my face good. Admittedly I liked their previous formula better, but it's still the best I've found (if anyone has a better one they'd like to reccommend, please let me know). I like that it's a physical sunscreen and uses non-nano zinc oxide, yet doesn't leave a white cast on your face. I hear the chemical sunscreens are carcinogenic so I try to stay away from those. With that said, I'm not sure physical ones are completely safe either. They probably aren't. But I think they're better than the chemical ones.

I've stayed out of the sun 99% of the time for the past 4 or so years (I'm 26). I always wear sunscreen and a hat (from coolibar if you're wondering) together outside, since I don't trust the sunscreen to do all the work. I use suncreen when I'm indoors as well, if I'm near a window or glass. Once you get in the routine of it, it feels weirder to go without. By the way, I look ridiculous in the winter with the hat. It's one of those visors you normally wear in the summer, but I'm vain enough to use it every single day, no matter the weather.

I don't want to toot my own horn, since I am certainly not the queen of perfect skin, but I definitely notice a huge difference between me and my friends. They have light wrinkles beginning to form on their faces, especially crow's feet, but I have absolutely none. No sun spots either! I don't know if it will stay that way in my 30s, but so far so good. I never had a great diet (I'm still working on that), but I think its importance with regards to skin is overstated. I think a nutritious diet is most important for health. If you're not taking precautions with the sun and hydrating your skin, I don't see it making much of a difference. Perhaps as a final add-on to everything else, but not the main thing. I think sleep is more important. And of course, facial exercises! :)

I take a vitamin D supplement everyday to make up for the lack of sun exposure, but I am almost positive this is not as healthy as actually getting your body to synthesize it. I only hope it's good enough.

Thanks for reading!

I once read about the sunscreen you use having been interfered with by FDA so that it now has more ingredients that it didn't have; preservatives IIRC. Let me see if I can find the discussion on this.

I use Badger Sunscreen and like it. A good place to look up the safety of products is EWG Skin Deep's Cosmetic Database and this is information for BurnOut and that for Badger.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Nonie!

That's a really useful site, thank you. Hmm, maybe I'll give Badger Sunscreen a try. I had rejected it before because I heard it leaves an obvious white cast on your face, but admittedly I've never tried it myself. I suppose if you rub it in well enough that's not the case?

After doing a little research, Biore Watery Essence seems to be another good sunscreen that has something called tinosorb in it, which protects against UVA and UVB and is apparently safer (according to research so far anyway).
Looks like there are more options out there since I last looked. Will give them a try. :)
