Will facial exercise change the shape of the face?

Post by Tom Hagerty »

People often send me emails asking if facial exercises can change the essential shape of the face. For example, I was recently asked if "lip incompetence" might be corrected by a proper facial exercise program. Here is what lip incompetence looks like.

The upper and lower lips do not meet when they are at rest. If the upper and lower lips are forcibly brought together, this causes what is called "lip strain." No one wants to be seen with their lips always wide open or with a continual lip strain.

Facial exercise does not correct bone formation or bite deformity. It only firms up the facial muscles connected to the bones of the face. But modern orthodontia and certain surgical procedures can improve a face enormously. I've seen the results in several young people who live around me. This facial improvement is not just a cosmetic thing; it changes the personality of these young kids. A good face often means more self-confidence and social success.
